Babes of Bass Interview #20: Athena

Bass n Babes joined forces with Electric Hawk to touch down at Shambhala music festival and interview some of the badass women on the lineup. We had the pleasure of speaking with Athena after she made her debut at the Amp Stage.

Hi, this is Baby Kush, here at Shambhala with Bass n Babes and Electric Hawk, interviewing an amazing artist who just got off of the AMP stage, can you tell us your artist name?

Hi, my name’s Athena.

And how would you describe your sound?

I would describe my sound as minimal, dark, dubstep.

When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ and music producer?

I didn’t really. I kind of just fell into it during the dark days of the first covid lockdown, kind of used it as a creative outlet I guess when I had nothing else, and kind of felt that void for music in general when we didn’t have live events and couldn’t go be in front of a sound system so I felt that pull, I guess, to music so I started producing and then people asked me if I wanted to play shows and I was like I guess! And now I play shows and I love it!

Do you feel like your style has changed from when you started producing until now?

I wouldn’t say so, honestly. I feel like I’ve always been really passionate about that one specific sound, although I like to produce and listen to a lot of other styles I think when it comes to playing shows and what I like to release, that kind of foundation of 140 is what I really gravitate to, mostly.

What is your advice to aspiring femme DJs and producers?

I would say to anyone looking to get into it, stay true to yourself, stay genuine to what feels like you, don’t try to rush anything, just focus on what feels original to you and what you feel super proud of. When something feels like you, that’s how you know it’s, like, ready. Don't hold back or let anyone change how you feel about your project.

Do you have a dream B2B set?

I think my dream back to back would be Khiva, honestly, ‘cause I think she’s awesome and she’s inspired me a lot. She’s dope, and we have similar styles so I feel like we would vibe.

What do you want your legacy to be?

I think I would want my legacy to just be someone who was like really passionate and authentic and true to themselves, someone who just really loves dubstep I guess and cares about the music.

Bass or Babe?

I don’t know, that’s really hard. That’s like asking me music or women, like, that’s my whole life. I think I have to go with bass though, ‘cause that’s the whole reason I’m here.
