Babes of Bass Interview #19: Puka

The final interview of Lightning in a Bottle is with puka. puka is a Denver-based DJ known for her mystical experimental and deep bass sound. Passionate about sound system culture, puka takes pride in her work as an experimental producer and engineer. Dive in with puka and Baby Kush during her interview at Lightning in a Bottle:

Baby Kush: How did you choose your artist name?

puka: The root word for it means that its authentic and genuine. You know, like puka shells? I kept writing it, just four letters, and I was like, I really like this! That’s kind of my sound too, I’m just in this journey of finding it, honestly.

Baby Kush: What advice do you have for aspiring women DJs and producers?

puka: To share knowledge with each other and ask questions. Don’t be scared to ask questions and gain more knowledge. Speak up and use your voice when you can and when you need to.

Baby Kush: What is your most memorable fan interaction?

puka: Today, my brother came to my set and he drove like 6 hours out of the blue and he’s definitely my #1 fan.

Baby Kush: When did you realize that you wanted to be a DJ and music producer?

puka: It kind of happened on its own. Everyone around me inspired me more to do it once I learned how.

Baby Kush: What is your dream b2b?

puka: Skrillex, that would be so much fun.

Baby Kush: What do you want your legacy to be?

puka: I just try to do my best and help people wake up, spread awareness. We’re all living in the same community and same planet. If we can all just be kind to each other and take care of it better, I think that would be my legacy.
