Babes of Bass Interview #18: HerShe

Our festival team hit the ground running at Same Same But Different and linked up with HerShe, who played for the Good Society Pre-party. A self-taught artist and producer, HerShe started her musical journey beatboxing at age 11, spinning on the decks at 14, and became an independent music producer by 19. Beatboxing is both a creative skill she integrates into her music, AND a competitive outlet where she won the Electric Forest Beatbox Battle Championship, American Beatbox Championships (2v2s), New York Beatbox Championship, and landed 5th place in the Beatboxing World Championships in Berlin. She incorporates Beatboxing, DJing, and Rapping into her sets, adding that special and unique element to her live performances. HerShe prides herself on using her platform as a way to spread positive social messages, especially to other aspiring female and LGBTQ+ musicians. Check out what she has to say!

BK: What’s up, Bass Babes? We are here at Same Same But Different. We've got another amazing artist interview for you today. What is your artist name?

H: Hershe baby.

BK: How would you describe the evolution of your sound?

H: Feeling a hip hop sub live, and then just listening to like techno and metal. All it is, is just adrenaline, goosebumps, you know? That's the evolution.

BK: What is your advice to aspiring fem and queer DJs and producers?

H: Be yourself. Don't let anybody stop your shine.

BK: When did you realize that you wanted to be a DJ?

H: Maybe middle school? And I remember I had an iPod shuffle. My cousin Skye's birthday party, I was playing like my “My Humps.” I remember everyone just kind of dancing to it and I was like, what is this feeling I'm feeling? I'm like, can I play other people's music for a living? And then I Googled and DJ came up. And I was like, yes!

BK: What do you wish that a younger version of yourself knew before you started your artistic journey?

H: Don't take no shit. Focus less on what other people are doing and focus more on what you're doing.

BK: What is your most memorable fan interaction?

H: Krakow, Poland, it was a beatbox event. I did a three and a half hour, four hour freestyle set. And you were just gripping at every fucking… I mean, like they were like holding onto their shirts and every one… I was, I would look up and they'd just be like, AHHH!

BK: What is your dream back to back?

H: First thing that popped in my head was LYNY. Come on, brother!

BK: What do you want your legacy to be?

H: Pop and pussy shaking ass and head-banging baby.

BK: Word.
