Babes of Bass Interview #12: Chixy Guap
Bass n Babes joined forces with Electric Hawk to touch down at Shambhala music festival and interview some of the badass women on the lineup. We had the pleasure of speaking with Chixy Guap after she made her debut at the Amp Stage.
BBaby Kush: It’s Baby Kush here at Shambhala with Bass n Babes and Electric Hawk!
Chixy Guap: I’m Chixy Guap!
How would you describe your sound?
Chixy Guap: I’m a global bass DJ. I definitely play a lot of different genres. They almost always have a lot of Afro/Latin rhythms. I’m always evolving as an artist. It’s always rooted in hip-hop and bass and Latin music too, I’ve spent a ton of time in Latin America, so that was a really big element.
When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ?
Chixy Guap: I was out for a run listening to a mix and I had this epiphany that I needed to just start making my own shit.
What do you wish a younger version of yourself knew before you started your journey?
Chixy Guap: I thought you just had to be kind of born a genius. I would just tell myself to start. You probably have all the tools you probably need just to get that jump start. All the elements don’t have to be there.
Do you have any advice for aspiring younger femme DJs and producers?
Chixy Guap: You don’t have to know what every genre is. Trust yourself and trust your taste. You probably have your own style and your own place in the scene. And there is room for what calls to you.
What is your dream back to back set?
Chixy Guap: I think it would be Bianca Oblivion, I’m a huge fan. And we have fairly similar styles.
What do you want your legacy to be?
Chixy Guap: I would just hope to inspire people to do their thing. Trust in your voice and your spice that you bring to the table.
