Babes of Bass Interview #10: The Librarian

Bass n Babes joined forces with Electric Hawk to interview some of the badass women on the Shambhala lineup. Kicking off our Shambhala interview is The Librarian. The Librarian is a celebrated Canadian DJ, producer and curator. As the co-founder and music director of Bass Coast Music Festival, she is an active tastemaker shaping the future of bass music. Equally an artist and entrepreneur, The Librarian’s reputation as an inclusive community-builder int he electronic world has brought her a legion of fans across the globe.

Baby Kush: Hey, it’s Baby Kush here at Shambhala with Bass n Babes and Electric Hawk. Today we’re interviewing an amazing artist who just crushed it at The Grove stage.

The Librarian: I am The Librarian. I was named by my best friend, Liz. I had like a wide library of music, and I can’t help but look like one.

Baby Kush: When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ and music producer?

The Librarian: Well that's a funny question because it was actually here [at Shambhala]. I was a live musician at the time, and I discovered sound system culture and the community around it and I realized immediately that that’s what I wanted to do. So it’s always really special to play here.

Baby Kush: How would you describe your sound?

The Librarian: I love to travel through different genres but mostly they’re all rooted in bass music.

Baby Kush: Do you feel like your style has changed from when you started DJing until now?

The Librarian: I like to evolve all the time. At the beginning I was very much a dubstep DJ but then over the years I've grown to appreciate so many other genres; I collect everything.

Baby Kush: What do you wish a younger version of yourself knew?

The Librarian: Do not be afraid to ask other artists for support or help. People want to share.

Baby Kush: Do you have any advice for aspiring women DJs and producers?

The Librarian: Just focus on what you’re doing. Don't pay a lot of attention to thoughts or criticisms that can slow you down and just stay true to yourself and keep going.

Baby Kush: Do you have a dream B2B set?

The Librarian: Madam X is here on site and she and I have been dreaming about doing a back to back, and we’re like, if someone doesn’t show, we would love to do that together…

;)

Baby Kush: What is your most memorable fan interaction?

The Librarian: 10 years ago at Bass Coast, I looked up while I was DJing and this whole crew had made Book Club signs. Every year they upgraded their sign and that’s grown into sort of a bigger thing, and it was so cute.

Baby Kush: What do you want your legacy to be?

The Librarian: Always focusing on building community and so hopefully that community is my legacy.
