Babes of Bass Interview #29: Clearcast
The third interview of Lightning in a Bottle 2026 is with Clearcast. Clearcast is a non-binary UK Bass dj and producer based out of San Francisco, CA. Their sound is an intersection of breakbeat bangers and introspective euphoria, with dreamy soundscapes and bright melodies pulled from internet electronica and experimental dance music. Clearcast has played alongside artists such as Skrillex, Fred Again, and Interplanetary Criminal. Dive in with Clearcast and Baby Kush during their interview at Lightning in a Bottle:
Baby Kush: What’s your artist name and how did you come up with it?
Clearcast: My name is Clearcast. I was looking for a name years and years ago and I was thinking of all the years I spent playing this game called World of Warcraft. I always played a mage in those games like in all the RPGs I played growing up. I was going through the mage talents and I found one called “clear casting". I was like, ‘that's a really cool name I'll stick with it.’
Baby Kush: How would you describe your flavor of music?
Clearcast: I try to bridge the gaps between really dancy, melodic, and pop-y music. I’m inspired by a lot of the dance music that's come in this post hyperpop wave from the last three or four years.
Baby Kush: When did you realize you wanted to be a DJ and producer?
Clearcast: I used to jam with this group of people in high school who were like 2 years older than me. I really looked up to them and one day I was hanging out with them after we were jamming and they showed me Ableton. I had never really used music producing software before that. I got into it with making future bass, chillwave, and down tempo kinds of [sounds].
Baby Kush: Who are some women and queer folks who have inspired you on your artistic journey?
Clearcast: People like Caroline Polachek, Magdalena Bay, Charli XCX, and Sophie I feel like are really easy ones to pick. That kind of whole lineage of experimental pop. There's this artist Katie Day who has this crazy glitchy kind of pop sound. It felt like the speakers were falling apart and that was really interesting to me.
Baby Kush: What is your advice for aspiring femme and women producers?
Clearcast: Don't feel pressure to pigeon hole yourself. Don't feel pressured to be a certain mold. When I was building my stage presence and figuring out ‘how do I be more than just a DJ and be like a performer?’ So many examples that I could think of of DJs were super masculine. A lot of the models for that are masculine so there's a lot of awesome room to be explored. Having presence but not quite in [the masculine] way.
Baby Kush: What is the most memorable rave trinket that someone has given you?
Clearcast: One of the forest spirits from Princess Mononoke! I found it in one of the take one leave one boxes [at the Untz Festival].Check out the video interview on Instagram here.
