Babes of Bass Interview #30: Mary Droppinz

The fourth interview of Lightning in a Bottle 2026 is with Mary Droppinz. Droppinz pushes the sonic boundaries of music by combining her energy and genre diversity to create a unique bass music experience. What inspires and drives her are the sounds of the underground paired with her favorite iconic vocals. Droppinz creates an eye opening & digestible experience with different underground sounds like playful breakbeats, acid basslines, jungle, OG dubstep, deep wubs, UKG, UK rap, melodic riddims, classic Detroit electro, trap, housey rhythms and hard drums. Dive in with Mary Droppinz and Baby Kush during their interview at Lightning in a Bottle:

Baby Kush: What’s your artist name and how did you come up with it?

Droppinz: Name is Mary Droppinz. I came up with this actually as a little joke. One of my first DJ gigs was in front of my coworkers for a summer party. I put on the flyer, “Mary Droppinz” because I thought it was just like a fire DJ name and no one would know it was me. So all day everyone was like, “Who is Mary Droppinz?” And I was like, “The sickest DJ ever! We’re getting her first!”

Baby Kush: How would you describe your flavor of bass music?

Droppinz: Filthy, naughty, nasty, airy, spacious, and wubby.

Baby Kush: What was your favorite song you played in your set last night?

Droppinz: A new Harlem Shake edit that I made with my friend Jaguar. We were just having fun in the studio and her and I just threw this together and tested it at Lightning in a Bottle last night and it went off!

Baby Kush: When did you realize that you wanted to be a DJ and Producer?

Droppinz: I realized that I wanted to be a DJ first, that was in 2011 when I first went to Coachella. I knew I wanted to be a producer once I actually started DJing and going out and playing music for people and just building the passion and was like, “I want to make my own.”

Baby Kush: Who are some up and coming women and queer artists in the scene that you are listening to right now?

Droppinz: Flava D, Juliet Mendoza, Sarah Landry and ALLEYCVT, A Hundred Drums, those ladies are absolutely crushing it. Up and coming: GUNS out in the UK and Skilah as well out in the UK.

Baby Kush: What is the most memorable rave trinket that someone has given you?

Droppinz: A 3D printing of like a chain that someone made me and it had my logo on it. I was like “Woah, this is fire!” Also a 3D printed flute, because I like to play the flute and I have flutes at home. They made me a pocket flute, so something I could bring on the road!
